FEDERAL SKILLED WORKER

The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) under Express Entry is designed for skilled trade workers who want to become permanent residents of Canada.

HOW THIS PROGRAM WORKS

To qualify, you must meet all of the following minimum requirements:

  • Skilled trade work experience in eligible NOC groups

  • A valid job offer OR a certificate of qualification

  • Minimum language ability in English or French

If you meet these requirements, IRCC assesses your eligibility based on a 100-point selection system. A minimum score of 67 points is required to qualify.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

1. Skilled Work Experience:To qualify, you must have:

  • At least two years of full-time work experience (or equivalent part-time) in a skilled trade within the last five years.

  • A valid job offer for full-time employment of at least one year OR

  • A certificate of qualification in your skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial, or federal authority.


Eligible skilled trades are categorized under the National Occupational Classification (NOC):

  • Major Group 72 – Industrial, electrical, and construction trades

  • Major Group 73 – Maintenance and equipment operation trades

  • Major Group 82 – Supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture, and related production

  • Major Group 92 – Processing, manufacturing, and utility supervisors and central control operators

  • Minor Group 632 – Chefs and cooks

  • Minor Group 633 – Butchers and bakers


2. Language Ability:

 You must take an approved language test in English or French and meet the following minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) scores:

  • Speaking & Listening: CLB 5

  • Reading & Writing: CLB 4

  • ​Language test results are valid for two years and must be valid on the day you apply for permanent residency.

 
3. Education:
 While there is no education requirement, you can increase your Express Entry ranking by:

  • Having a Canadian certificate, diploma, or degree from a recognized secondary (high school) or post-secondary institution.

  • Obtaining an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) if you completed your education outside Canada. ​The ECA must confirm that your foreign credential is equivalent to a Canadian secondary or post-secondary qualification.
